General Blinds Questions

We measure your windows accurately, discuss your style and privacy needs, and provide a tailored quote — all in the comfort of your home. How long do blinds last?

With proper care, quality blinds can last 10–15 years or more. Longevity depends on the type of blind, frequency of use, sun exposure, and regular maintenance. Signs it’s time to replace your blinds include difficulty operating, visible fading, warping, broken mechanisms, or fabric damage.

How are blinds priced?

Blinds are typically priced based on:

  • Window size and dimensions
  • Fabric or material selection
  • Manual or motorised operation
  • Installation requirements
  • Customisation options

For an accurate quote, we recommend booking a free measure and consultation so we can assess your space and provide clear, upfront pricing with no hidden fees.

What should I look for when buying blinds?

When choosing blinds, consider:

  • Light control: Blockout, sunscreen, or light-filtering options
  • Privacy needs: Full privacy vs. partial visibility
  • Room type: Bedroom, living area, kitchen, bathroom, or office
  • Style and colour: Coordinating with your interior design
  • Durability: High-traffic areas require robust materials
  • Ease of cleaning: Some fabrics require more maintenance
  • Motorisation: Smart home integration and convenience

Our team will guide you through the best solution for your home and lifestyle during your free consultation.

Why can blind colours look different at home?

Lighting makes a significant difference.Showroom lighting and natural light in your home can dramatically change how fabrics appear. Sunlight direction, downlights, wall colours, flooring, and furnishings all affect how a blind looks once installed. That’s why we strongly recommend viewing samples in your own space during your free in-home consultation before making a final decision.

What is the difference between blockout and sunscreen blinds?

Blockout blindsare manufactured with opaque, light-blocking materials that provide maximum privacy and complete room darkening — ideal for bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms, and shift workers who need darkness during daylight hours.

Sunscreen blindsare designed with mesh or perforated fabrics that reduce glare and harmful UV exposure while still allowing natural light and outside views to filter through — perfect for living areas, kitchens, and offices where you want to maintain a connection to the outdoors.

Many homeowners choose a double roller blind system to enjoy both options in the same window, alternating between blockout and sunscreen as needed.

Can blinds be motorised?

Yes. Many of our roller blinds, Venetian blinds, and selected products can be motorised for added convenience and safety. Motorised blinds can be operated via:

  • Remote control
  • Wall switch
  • Smartphone app (compatible with iOS and Android)
  • Smart home integration (Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit)
  • Solar-powered options available

Motorisation is ideal for large windows, hard-to-reach areas, elderly or disabled users, and modern smart homes. Ask our team about motorisation options during your consultation.

How do I clean my blinds?

Cleaning methods depend on the product type:

  • Roller blinds: Wipe gently with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals.
  • Venetian blinds: Dust regularly with a feather duster or microfiber cloth. Wipe slats individually with mild soapy water for deeper cleaning.
  • Vertical blinds: Light vacuum with brush attachment or wipe with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Shutters: Dust with a soft cloth and wipe with mild soapy water. Avoid excess moisture.
  • Roman shades: Vacuum gently with upholstery attachment. Professional dry cleaning recommended for fabrics.
  • Honeycomb/cellular blinds: Dust with a soft brush or hairdryer on cool setting.

Regular cleaning will extend the life and appearance of your blinds. Always check the care instructions provided with your specific product.

Troubleshooting & Repairs

Why can’t I close my Security or Crimsafe Door?

If your security or Crimsafe door isn’t closing properly, common causes include:

  • Misaligned strike plate:The latch isn’t catching correctly. Adjustment of the strike plate position may be required.
  • Dirty or sticky latch mechanism: Dust and debris can build up. Clean with a soft brush and apply silicone-based lubricant.
  • Door sagging: Hinges may be loose or worn. Tighten hinge screws or replace if necessary.
  • Worn magnetic catch: Magnets lose strength over time and may need replacement.
  • Frame expansion: In humid conditions, door frames can expand. Minor planing or adjustment may be needed.

If simple cleaning and lubrication doesn’t resolve the issue, contact our service team for professional assessment.

Why is my Sliding Door not sliding or sliding smoothly?

Sliding door issues are typically caused by:

  • Dirty or damaged rollers:Clean rollers with a brush and vacuum track. Apply silicone lubricant — never use oil-based products.
  • Debris in the track: Dirt, leaves, and small objects can block movement. Thoroughly clean the entire track.
  • Worn roller wheels: Rollers wear down over time and may need replacement.
  • Track misalignment: The door may have come off its track. Realignment may be required.
  • Bent or damaged track: Physical damage may require professional repair or track replacement.

Regular track cleaning and annual roller maintenance will extend the life of your sliding door.

Why is my Security or Crimsafe Door not opening or closing smoothly?

Smooth operation issues with security doors often stem from:

  • Hinge tension: Adjust the tension screws on self-closing hinges.
  • Weather seal compression:New seals may be too tight — they will soften over time or may need adjustment.
  • Lock mechanism stiffness: Apply graphite powder or silicone lubricant to the lock cylinder.
  • Door drop: Over time, doors can drop slightly. Hinge adjustment is usually the solution.
  • Corrosion: In coastal areas, corrosion can affect moving parts. Regular maintenance is essential.
Awning or Blinds not travelling correctly?

If your awning or external blind isn’t extending or retracting properly:

  • Check for obstructions: Leaves, branches, or debris may be blocking the path.
  • Inspect fabric tension: Fabric may have stretched or become loose.
  • Motor issues: For motorised awnings, check power supply and remote batteries.
  • Worn drive components: Gears, springs, or drive belts may require replacement.
  • Track alignment: Side tracks may be bent or misaligned.
My Awning or Blind is moving very slowly and/or only a short distance?

Slow or limited movement typically indicates:

  • Low battery power: Replace batteries in remote or motor unit.
  • Motor overheating: Allow motor to cool down before further use.
  • Excessive friction: Clean and lubricate moving parts.
  • End limit settings: Limits may need reprogramming.
  • Worn motor: Motors have a finite lifespan and may need replacement.
Roller/Roman Blind not rolling smoothly or correctly?

Common causes and solutions:

  • Chain tension issues: Continuous loop chains may be twisted or tangled. Straighten the chain.
  • Spring mechanism: Internal spring tension may need adjustment.
  • Fabric catching: Fabric may be catching on the brackets or side channels.
  • Worn clutch mechanism: The clutch may be slipping and require replacement.
  • Uneven rolling: The blind may not be level. Check bracket alignment.
My Venetian Blind won’t stay up or slips from its set position?

This is usually a cord lock or tilt mechanism issue:

  • Worn cord lock: The locking mechanism inside the headrail may be worn and not gripping the cord.
  • Dirty cord lock: Dust and debris can prevent proper gripping. Try cleaning with compressed air.
  • Stretched lift cords: Over time, cords can stretch and lose tension.
  • Broken internal components: Springs or locking pins may be broken.

Note: There are two identical questionsin your original list — this answer covers both.

Shutter Blades not turning smoothly or easily?

If your plantation shutter louvers are difficult to adjust:

  • Dust buildup: Clean between blades and around tilt rod connections.
  • Loose tilt rod:Connectors may be loose — tighten carefully.
  • Worn hinge pins: Plastic or metal hinge pins can wear and create friction.
  • Blade warping: Extreme heat or moisture can warp timber blades.
  • Paint or finish buildup: Multiple paint layers can cause blades to stick together.
Are none of the suggestions working or not listed above?

Don’t attempt to disassemble or force mechanisms — this may void your warranty and cause further damage.
